A hearty Amish casserole made with seasoned hamburger steaks, sliced potatoes, and homemade gravy, baked until golden and comforting.
1.5 lbs ground beef (80/20)
1 large yellow onion, sliced
3–4 medium Yukon Gold potatoes, thinly sliced
2 cloves garlic, minced
3 tbsp all-purpose flour
2 tbsp butter
2 cups beef broth
½ cup heavy cream (or whole milk)
1 tsp salt
½ tsp black pepper
½ tsp onion powder
½ tsp paprika
1 tbsp chopped parsley (optional)
Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
Season ground beef and form into 4–6 oval patties.
Brown patties in skillet, 2–3 minutes per side. Remove.
Sauté onions and garlic in butter until soft.
Stir in flour and cook 1–2 minutes.
Gradually whisk in beef broth. Simmer until thickened.
Stir in cream. Season to taste.
Layer half the potatoes in baking dish, followed by hamburger steaks, then remaining potatoes.
Pour gravy evenly over top.
Cover with foil and bake 60 minutes. Uncover and bake 15–20 more minutes.
Rest 10 minutes before serving.
Add shredded cheese during final baking for extra richness. Can be made a day ahead or frozen for later. Serve with green beans or homemade applesauce.
