Amish Hamburger Steak Bake – Cozy, Hearty, and Family-Friendly

A hearty Amish casserole made with seasoned hamburger steaks, sliced potatoes, and homemade gravy, baked until golden and comforting.

Ingredients

  • 1.5 lbs ground beef (80/20)

  • 1 large yellow onion, sliced

  • 34 medium Yukon Gold potatoes, thinly sliced

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 3 tbsp all-purpose flour

  • 2 tbsp butter

  • 2 cups beef broth

  • ½ cup heavy cream (or whole milk)

  • 1 tsp salt

  • ½ tsp black pepper

  • ½ tsp onion powder

  • ½ tsp paprika

  • 1 tbsp chopped parsley (optional)

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.

  • Season ground beef and form into 4–6 oval patties.

  • Brown patties in skillet, 2–3 minutes per side. Remove.

  • Sauté onions and garlic in butter until soft.

  • Stir in flour and cook 1–2 minutes.

  • Gradually whisk in beef broth. Simmer until thickened.

  • Stir in cream. Season to taste.

  • Layer half the potatoes in baking dish, followed by hamburger steaks, then remaining potatoes.

  • Pour gravy evenly over top.

  • Cover with foil and bake 60 minutes. Uncover and bake 15–20 more minutes.

  • Rest 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

Add shredded cheese during final baking for extra richness. Can be made a day ahead or frozen for later. Serve with green beans or homemade applesauce.
