This Hamburger Potato Casserole is a layered comfort food classic with ground beef, sliced potatoes, and creamy, cheesy goodness—perfect for cozy family dinners.
1 lb ground beef
1 small onion, diced
4–5 medium russet potatoes, thinly sliced
1 (10.5 oz) can cream of mushroom soup
1/2 cup milk or cream
2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
1/2 tsp garlic powder
Salt and pepper to taste
Butter or nonstick spray (for greasing dish)
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
In a skillet, brown ground beef with onion. Season with garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Drain excess fat.
In a bowl, whisk soup and milk until smooth.
Layer half the potatoes in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.
Add half the ground beef mixture, half the soup mix, and half the cheese.
Repeat layers with remaining ingredients.
Cover with foil and bake for 60 minutes.
Remove foil and bake another 20–25 minutes until potatoes are tender and cheese is golden.
Let rest for 10 minutes before serving.
Use cream of chicken or cheddar soup for variation.
Add veggies like spinach or bell peppers between layers.
Can be assembled ahead and baked later.
