Sloppy Joes are hearty ground beef sandwiches simmered in a rich tomato sauce and served on soft toasted buns for a comforting meal.

Ingredients

1 pound ground beef 80 percent lean
1 small onion finely chopped
1 small green bell pepper finely chopped
2 cloves garlic minced
3/4 cup ketchup
2 tablespoons tomato paste
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon yellow mustard
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1/4 cup water or beef broth if needed
4 hamburger buns split and lightly toasted

Instructions

  • Heat a large skillet over medium heat and cook the ground beef until browned, about 5 to 7 minutes. Drain excess grease.

  • Add onion and bell pepper and cook for 4 minutes until softened. Stir in garlic and cook 30 seconds.

  • Reduce heat to medium low and stir in ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, brown sugar, salt, and pepper.

  • Simmer for 10 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened. Add water or broth if needed to adjust consistency.

  • Spoon the hot mixture onto toasted buns and serve immediately.
