Sloppy Joes are hearty ground beef sandwiches simmered in a rich tomato sauce and served on soft toasted buns for a comforting meal.
1 pound ground beef 80 percent lean
1 small onion finely chopped
1 small green bell pepper finely chopped
2 cloves garlic minced
3/4 cup ketchup
2 tablespoons tomato paste
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon yellow mustard
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1/4 cup water or beef broth if needed
4 hamburger buns split and lightly toasted
Heat a large skillet over medium heat and cook the ground beef until browned, about 5 to 7 minutes. Drain excess grease.
Add onion and bell pepper and cook for 4 minutes until softened. Stir in garlic and cook 30 seconds.
Reduce heat to medium low and stir in ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, brown sugar, salt, and pepper.
Simmer for 10 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened. Add water or broth if needed to adjust consistency.
Spoon the hot mixture onto toasted buns and serve immediately.
